Amelie is a character appearing in Silent Hill: The Short Message. She is a friend and confidant of both Anita Planert and Maya Hindenburg, being of their same age and attending the same high school as they do.
History[]
Although initially she is presented to the players as merely a close friend who supports and worries about Anita, further interactions and the progress of Anita's memories show that she has her own issues to contend with, and also that the secrets and dark spots in their relationship are at the core of the events that set the game in motion.
In her personal life, Amelie is mentioned to be experiencing a moment of great distress, since the financial situation of her family is going to prevent her from attending medical school at a university outside of town, which she had already been accepted into. Aside from the impact on her future, she was also determined to leave her house before her brother returned from his own studies. The reason for this is never made explicit, but she mentions in her writing several times that she "can't stand" the way he looks at her, an issue that had been ongoing for a long time and had gotten worse "since that day".
Her other main reason for grief is her having not been able to foresee or avoid Maya's suicide. Although this initially seems to be largely unrelated to the events of the game, as the player is shown more of the relationship between the three, it is shown that Anita eventually grew jealous of the degree of attention and infatuation she perceived Maya to have on Amelie, blaming her for Maya not noticing her and even accusing her in her mind of taking away "the only friend she had". This situation culminated shortly before Maya's suicide, when Anita found and hid a letter Maya had written to Amelie, talking about her suicidal thoughts.
Anita eventually confesses to her actions to Amelie as a final act of atonement for her guilt during a call on the roof of the Villa. Shortly after, a phone call from Amelie snaps Anita back to reality in the nick of time to prevent her from jumping to her death from that same spot. In the credits of the game, a post by Amelie on her social media is shown, mentioning that she will be leaving her hometown with her best friend: Anita.
