Astrid Johansen is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. She is one of the six ensemble protagonists and a main character in the Stilledalen, Norway, storyline.
History[]
Background[]
Astrid is the daughter of Karl and Ingrid Johansen.[2][3][note 1] Since she was a child, she was continuously exposed to her mother's abuse of her family, seeing her sister Eva receiving most of it. She was raised under the constant threat of Ingrid's anger, becoming a repressed and cold person externally.
After Eva's rampage in Stilledalen's town square, a teenager Astrid was tending to the farm, helping Ingrid to prepare dinner. Ingrid, knowing that Eva had carried out a massacre, demanded Astrid to gather wolfsbane from the farm and to poison Eva's teacup with it, in order to protect the honor of the family. As anticipated, Eva showed up at the farm that afternoon and sat down for dinner with her mother and sister. Astrid watched as she drank from the cup and started convulsing on her chair, falling to the floor and dying shortly after. With Eva dead in the dining room, Ingrid ordered Astrid to burn Eva's body and to bury it, to which Astrid fearfully obliged.
Eva's killing spree resulted in the Johansen family being targeted by the other residents of Stilledalen. Astrid's teenage years were spent as the new focus of both her mother's abuse and the town's hatred, as well as seeing Brit delve deeper into her addictions. While their aunt Mette Dahl often appeared as a nurturing person in their lives compared to Ingrid's aggressiveness, Astrid had unspecified reasons to be wary of her as well. In the end, she was unable to stand the abuse any longer, and left the farm to study neuropathology in college.
As an adult, she maintained her cold demeanor to block off the trauma of her childhood from affecting her life. Her perseverance on her studies paid off, as she graduated as neuropathologist years later. She also had her only child, Orson, with a partner that left for unknown motives. Determined to not become like Ingrid, Astrid worked hard on being a good mother to Orson, moving into their own house in Stilledalen while she worked at the town's hospital.

Astrid Johansen was voiced by Trude Øynes and first appeared in the Silent Hill: Ascension episode "Chapter 1: AMISS" as one of the show's six ensemble protagonists.[5][6]
