Ayakakashi (アヤカカシ)[3] is a creature that was present in Ebisugaoka, Japan, in the 1960s.[4][5]
Appearance and symbolism[]
Ayakakashi wears aged, tattered clothing and is described by Hinako Shimizu as a "moving scarecrow, or at least a monster that pretends to be a scarecrow." She opines that it resembles a crucified corpse from a distance.[2] Disguising itself as an inanimate object, the creature appears motionless from afar, stalking human prey when out of sight and otherwise striking within arm's reach.[1]
It shares its name with an urban legend recounted by a school newspaper:
Long ago, there was a sighting of a scarecrow monster known as Ayakakashi here in Ebisugaoka.
It appeared one sweltering summer day deep within the crop fields, dancing a most peculiar of dances, like a ripple of hot air.
People warned not to let one's gaze settle for too long upon its bizarre figure or try and get close to Ayakakashi.
For it will chase any who do to the ends of the earth before taking their life.[5]
A note found by Hinako in a rice paddy warns of "a monster who's only pretending to be a scarecrow that likes eating little kids".[5]

Ayakakashi was designed by NeoBards Entertainment for the video game Silent Hill ƒ.[6] Ayaka is a Japanese feminine name, the meaning of which is often related to flowers, beauty, and grace. Kakashi means scarecrow.[citation needed]
