Brit Johansen is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. She is the youngest daughter of Karl Johansen and Ingrid Johansen and runs away from home at a young age due to Ingrid's constant abuse, forcing Brit to cope with drugs and alcohol. Overtime, Brit started to resent her older sister Astrid Johansen due to her passiveness in their mother's abuse and only agreed to return to Stilledalen for her funeral once she learns that Orson had gone missing during Ingrid's funeral.
History[]
Early life[]
Brit is the youngest of the Johansen sisters. At a young age, she was mentally scarred by the constant abuse her mother put the family through, especially her older sister, Eva. Eventually, she turned to alcohol and drugs to cope with her struggles, developing addictions that would follow her life. Despite this, she kept an active social life with her sisters and friends in town, with Nils Grønbekk as her best friend.
Stiledallen Massacre[]
The years of constant abuse from their mother and their father's absentee drove Eva to plan a mass shooting. She tricked Brit to help her by framing it as a prank. In turn, Brit convinced Nils and her friends to gather at the town square, in exchange for Eva getting her drugs. Unbeknownst to her, Eva went on a rampage and attacked everyone with their father's guns. Upon finding out what had happened, Brit delved deeper into her addiction, refusing to acknowledge her role in the massacre and cut all contacts with Nils, who had survived with severe nerve damage and chronic pain. As she tried to flee her responsibility, Nils began to harbor deep resentment for the Johansen family and Brit's abandonment.
Leaving home and rehabilitation[]
Eventually, Brit turned to self-harm through burning as she found herself the new target of Ingrid's abuse, once Astrid left their home to start her own family. Seeing how her father would not stand up for her and her worsen addiction to narcotics, Brit decided to left her home and move away. In addition, she limited contact with her family, only sparing brief and sparse calls with Astrid and Karl. With her life stable, she began to participate in rehabilitation programs to tackle her addictions. With the help of group therapy, Brit managed to control her destructive habits, though it remained unpredictable but believed things would get better. However, this was a deep-rooted barrier she put up to ignore her role in the massacre and wanted her family to pay for her mother's relentless abuse.
Return to Stilledalen[]
One day, Ingrid passed away from complications to her disease, with Brit learning of her death and was persuaded to come to the funeral by her father. However, Brit objected. She was later called by Astrid who attempted to persuade her once more. Brit rejected, owing to her childhood experience and how she had to cope with it. The following days, during Ingrid's funeral, Orson disappeared with her sister and father remained lost in the woods, trying to search for him. Brit was contacted by her aunt Mette Dahl about the news and joined the search party for her family. Eventually, she discovered Astrid and Karl, and learnt they had been missing for three days, though it felt like hours for the other.[2][3][4]
Brit admonished Astrid for not having informed her of Orson's disappearance, however, Astrid reasoned her alcoholic tendencies were unpredictable, and often destructive even during recovery. Following the police's decision to pull out of search and rescue, Astrid continued to search in the woods, when Brit called and threatened to have social workers take Orson away and compared her treatment of him to be similar to their mother's, with Orson claiming he was at the Ice Hotel with her. At the hotel, Brit was confronted by Astrid who demanded Orson from her. However, Brit was adamant she did not made the call nor have Orson but now found possibility in her having harm Orson. This confrontation slowly consumed Astrid's mind as she slowly believed to have kill him but was unaware. This was exasperated when Astrid was placed under suspicion of Orson's murder, following two bloody gloves being found in her posesssion. Eventually, this news reached to Nils, Brit's old friend and podcaster who covered true crime, they listened to the most recent episode, indicting Astrid as the probable culprit. A paranoid Astrid started to accuse Brit of having given the anonymous tip related to the gloves and updated the case to Nils, which enraged her and compared her paranoia to their mother.[5]
At the pier, Astrid and Brit reconcile their differences, with the former breaking down in tears, and feared she might have done it but was unaware of the act. However, Brit reassured she was not capable of such an act and advised her to talk to their father. However, Astrid still resented her father for his act of forcefully committing her to psychiatric. Knowing he needed to take responsibility for his role in their upbringing, Brit decided to have him accompany her to one of her rehabilitative meetings in the hopes he'd earnestly listen to their problems. At the meeting, Brit asked him to listen to her attentively, and began to describe how much the sisters needed his support and presence when Eva's shooting happened. However, Karl began to have his dissociative episode and perceived the Otherworld to have merged with creatures threatening to attack them. As he came back, he warned the group of monsters, humiliating and disappointing Brit as she realized he didn't listen to anything she said, before rushing out in shame.[6]
Eventually, Astrid was acquitted and detective Haugen was suspended, following allegation of evidence fabrication. At the bar, Brit visited them but was immediately told to leave by bartender Lejo who claimed she had broken furniture in a raging fit, but she had no recollection of the event herself and insisted to be nowhere near the day before. However, Brit was forced to leave either way. Sometime later, Brit confided in Astrid on whether she had committed the act, but her innocence was reassured by Astrid. During this time, Karl was isolated and pursued by a monster set out to kill the Johansen family, and had claimed their aunt Mette. As he shifted back, Karl returned to the farm to break the news to them, but barely coherent on the manner of her death and what he had seen. Terrified, he warned any of them could be next, before running away which shaken them both. Their father's mental state worsen, as he commented of their sister Eva who he regretted of not having protected her from Ingrid, and accidentally blurbed out Stilledalen's memorial square to Astrid and Lejo. Fearing he would commit the tragedy again, Brit and Astrid, with Haugen and Lejo arrived at the square, only to see Karl shot by a townsfolk. Their father blurbed out Eva's name and whether he had protected her, only for Brit to tell him of Eva's disappearance following the shooting 15 years back. Karl was admitted for his injuries, but later disappeared without Brit's knowledge of his survival and escape with Lejo's help.[7][8]
Following Karl's attempted shooting, Brit listened on Nils's interview of the recent event, growing more irritated and resentful of their family. Astrid dissuaded her from listening further and asked to sort their family's belonging, hoping to keep some in case their father returned. However, Brit lashed out, blaming their sister Eva for robbing their chances for happiness, tearing their family apart, and impacting their father's mental state. Breaking down in secret, Brit was tempted to drink alcohol again. However, she resisted and pour all its contents. Thinking they need to cut ties with the past, Brit suggested a spiritual cleansing, a practice her fellow rehabilitator had done when one of their own perished. The cleansing was to honor the ones they'd lost, by burning one of their deceased family member's possessions. However, Astrid refused to burn Orson's as she still believed of his survival but Brit gave her time to think on her suggestion. Eventually, they decided to go through with the cleansing and burned Ingrid's blanket, Mette's nursing cap, and Karl's shirt. However, when it came time for Orson's doll, Astrid refused to part and reiterated her reason. Eventually, Orson was returned to them, however, Brit noticed his odd behavior and lack of injuries, despite his long-period of time in the woods. She argued for Orson to get a check-up when Astrid was hesitant to admit him. However, her sister relented when Brit threatened to forcibly take him herself.[9]
Later, Brit called a fellow recovering addict who she wanted to share her struggles but was reminded of the methods she used to cope and taunted she would relapse, and eventual death. She met Ingrid's apparition who crudely enticed her with alcohol. However, Brit opposed her and destroy the bottle as an act of defiance. Returning from the hospital, Astrid discovered Brit's action but she framed it as a way to fight her addiction, much to her joy, seeing how hard she was working towards sobriety. The two embraced each other, before Brit left to clear her head. In the hospital, Brit was stopped from attending a meeting, following a member's accusatory of her telling a fellow addict named Jonas to start his relapse and eventual overdose. However, she did not know nor met Jonas and plead to be led in but was driven away regardless. However, Brit was offered another meeting later, and guaranteed the support she would needed much to her gratitude. Later, Brit found Astrid studying local folklore, and was relayed information on "the Lady of the Woods" who had taken Orson and caused his unnatural demeanour. She suggested the Lady could be one with vendetta against the Johansen. To expand the search, Astrid asked Brit to collaborate with Nils by any means to track her down, despite Brit's apprehension and discomfort about the idea.[10]
The following day, Brit approached Nils at the pier and asked to collaborate in her search. Initially, Nils spitefully remarked about their nerve damage caused by her sister but was willing to help if they mend 15-years lost of relationship once Brit apologised for her abandonment. Following a lead from one of Nils' listeners, they ventured to the woods to search the Tredame, a tree with a knot resembling a woman's face. However, the search turned vain, as they were attacked by Otherworld creatures. Nils successfully escaped but Brit stayed behind and saw her doppelgänger who asked her to get pills that would drive away the voices in her head, which disturbed her as she left her behind. Unaware of Orson's violent actions had sent Astrid to the Otherworld, Brit found him alone, and tried to peacefully approach him only to be chased throughout the house by a knife-wielding Orson, forcing Brit to commit both of them to the hospital.[10]
