Brit Johansen is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. She is the youngest daughter of Karl Johansen and Ingrid Johansen and runs away from home at a young age due to Ingrid's constant abuse, forcing Brit to cope with drugs and alcohol. Overtime, Brit starts to resent her older sister Astrid Johansen due to her passiveness in their mother's abuse and only agrees to return to Stilledalen for her funeral once she learns that Orson had gone missing during Ingrid's funeral.
History[]
Early life[]
Brit is the youngest of the three Johansen sisters. Even at a young age, she was mentally hurt by witnessing the constant abuse that her mother put the family through, especially her older sister, Eva. While she was still a pre-teen, she turned to alcohol and pills to cope with her struggles, developing an addiction that would haunt her for her life. Despite this, she kept an active social life with her sisters and friends in town, considering Nils Grønbekk her best friend.
Stilledallen Massacre[]
15 years before the events of the show, Eva convinced Brit to help her with a "prank" she had planned. Brit convinced Nils and her other friends to gather at the town square, in exchange for Eva getting her drugs. Unknown to Brit, Eva's intentions were to go on a rampage with their father's guns, attacking everyone present in the town square that day. Upon finding out what happened, Brit delved deeper into her addiction, refused to confront her guilt and cut all contact with Nils, who had survived the ordeal with severe nerve damage and chronic pain. As she tried to flee her responsibility on the massacre, Nils harbored deep resentment for the Johansen family and Brit's abandonment.
Leaving home and rehabilitation[]
Brit turned to self-harm through burning as she found herself as the new target of Ingrid's abuse, once Astrid left their home to start her own family. Seeing how Karl would never stand up for her and still dealing with addiction to narcotics, Brit took the decision to flee her family and move away from Stilledallen. She also cut contact with the family, besides brief and sparse calls with Astrid and Karl.
With her life in more order than in the Johansen farm, she began to participate in rehabilitation programs to tackle the issues that had plagued her for so long. With the help of group therapy, Brit managed to control her destructive habits, and she believed things would get better. However, this was just a deep-rooted barrier that she put up to ignore the part of her that allowed the massacre to happen and wanted her family to pay for the abuse she was put through.
Behind the scenes[]
“ | Brit Johansen. 25 to 35 years old; all ethnicities; woman. Karl and Ingrid’s middle, sensitive and self-harming daughter. Regarded as the ‘black sheep,’ she’s estranged from the family, living a life on the edge in Oslo where she works as a musician in a black metal band and battles with drug addiction. Brit has an angry, self-destructive streak that mars all of her personal relationships. She's not afraid to be confrontational when pushed. The abuse her mother inflicted on her has caused Brit to manifest a self-harming personality pattern akin to borderline. She’s repeated the patterns of her mother’s abuse in her romantic relationships, suffering through several dysfunctional relationships with other abusive women.
