The Chainsaw is an unlockable melee weapon found in Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 4: The Room, and Silent Hill: Book of Memories. It deals extremely high levels of damage, but it is quite slow, and the player's maneuverability is significantly reduced when wielding one.
Silent Hill[]
The chainsaw is found in a smashed window of the Cut Rite Chainsaws store on Bloch Street. In order to get it, the player must complete the game at least once to unlock the gasoline tank, found in the Hell Gas Station on Bloch St. With the gasoline tank they can choose to obtain either the chainsaw or rock drill, as both require the gasoline to be used.
The chainsaw is slightly less powerful than the rock drill and has different types of attacks, but is slow to recover and rather difficult to use. Unlike the rock drill, however, the chainsaw can be turned on and used to attack enemies while Harry Mason is moving, allowing him to deal damage by simply walking into enemies. It is modeled after the chainsaw found in The Evil Dead.
Silent Hill 2[]
The player can only get the chainsaw during a second playthrough. After talking to Angela Orosco in the cemetery at the beginning of the game, a buzzing sound from an activated chainsaw can be heard in the background. While leaving the cemetery, the sound will get louder. Eventually, James Sunderland will come upon a pile of logs near Silent Hill Ranch, where the chainsaw is stuck.
The chainsaw is arguably the best melee weapon in the game, despite its drawbacks. It kills many enemies in one hit and is faster than the Great Knife, so overall, if the player is experienced enough to know when to start up the weapon and when to strike, it can be the most devastating melee weapon at the player's disposal, possibly killing a monster unscathed. It is powerful and has different attacks, but is slow to recover and has a brief waiting period while it warms up.
A hidden bonus to the chainsaw occurs when James is in the presence of an enemy: he will let out a battle cry.[1] If the player goes into standby mode with the chainsaw equipped, he will set it down blade first and lean on it like a cane.
Silent Hill 4: The Room[]
The chainsaw can be unlocked after beating the game at least once after playing in "New Fear" mode. Henry Townshend will find the chainsaw in the Forest World near Jasper Gein's car on the trunk of a cut-down tree. It has a good range and is more versatile than in previous games, but the damage it can deal varies, and it is slow when it comes to charging. But the player can still charge it when attacking with it.
A bonus similar to the one in Silent Hill 2 happens if the player leaves Henry alone long enough: he'll rev up the chainsaw and wave it over his head, but without a battle cry.
Walter Sullivan will occasionally wield one instead of his usual pipe.
Trivia[]
- Cut Rite Chainsaws, the location where the chainsaw is acquired in Silent Hill, bares the name of a store appearing in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2.[1][2][3][4]
- Finding the chainsaw in the HD Collection unlocks the trophy/achievement "Overkill".
