“ | Once, when I was little, I found this newborn bunny out on the farm. It had no fur, and two little holes in its belly from a cat bite. I thought I'd get in trouble if I killed it... so I wrapped it in a rag and left it to bleed out. But I never went back to see if it actually died... Do you think it died, Karl?

Eva Johansen is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. She was the eldest daughter of Karl and Ingrid Johansen and the one responsible for a massacre in Stilledalen, Norway, fifteen years before the events of Ascension.
History[]
Background[]
Eva was the eldest daughter of the Johansen family. From a young age, Eva exhibited antisocial behaviors, such as harming her schoolmates and watching animals slowly die out of curiosity, which would get her into trouble on a regular basis.[1] Because of this, Eva was physically and emotionally abused by Ingrid as a form of discipline, even being kicked out of the Johansen farm repeatedly. When she began to show an unusual interest in guns, Karl was responsible for training her. Eva formed a close relationship with him, although he would passively continue to let Eva be abused by her mother.
Eva's behavior became progressively more violent. At some point, she became a patient of child psychologist Olivia Haugen. However, despite Haugen's attempts, the therapy had no effect and only Eva's mental state remained unstabled. The constant abuse she received from her mother, the absence of Karl as a father figure and the social rejection of her peers (such as Nils Grønbekk, friend of her sisters) motivated her to carry out a mass shooting in Stilledalen's town square. Before Eva executed her plan, she had asked her sister Brit to lure her friends to the square in exchange for drugs to cope with her addictions, misleading her with claims of it just being a prank. That day, Eva went on a mass-shooting rampage, in which a dozen civilians would either die or be severely wounded (among them Haugen's daughter Aasta, and Nils).[2][3][4]
After the massacre, Eva returned home for a family dinner. Ingrid knew of Eva's actions and viewed them as shameful acts towards the family, seeking to remedy this by honor-killing. At the dinner table, Eva was lulled into a false sense of comfort and security by her sister Astrid, who offered her tea laced with poisonous wolfsbane after being coerced by her mother. Eva promptly began convulsing and fell dead on the floor, for which Ingrid forced Astrid to burn Eva's body with kerosene and bury her remains in the back of the farm, near the goat pen.[5]
Silent Hill: Ascension[]
In the weeks following Ingrid Johansen's death, Karl's unstable mind and the power of the other side manifested an apparition of Eva for him. In his twisted state of mind, Karl was unable to recognize her as his late daughter, instead believing her to be a neighbor who comes to him for support often. She first appeared in the living room of the farmhouse, while Orson, Astrid's young son, was temporarily suspended from school. While Orson didn't acknowledge her presence, Karl held a conversation with her about being kicked out of the house by her mother and how she used to behave similarly to Orson when she was a kid. Eva persuaded him to tell Orson of Ingrid's passing by telling the story of how her father dealt with grief once, while Karl remained unaware of the story being about him. [1]
Eva appeared again a few days later, taking Karl to a gutted animal in the farm. She convinced him of something stalking them in the woods, before asking him to teach her how to shoot a gun for protection. She returned the next day while Karl buried another dead animal, telling him a story about a dead rabbit she found and studied in her room, causing her mother's wrath. In the middle of it, Karl and Eva were attacked by a Snarler, which Eva attempted to shoot unsuccessfully, forcing Karl to take the gun and shoot it away. While waiting for Karl's decision, Eva spent the next afternoon trying to shoot cans, gaining his attention. Karl gave in and guided her through the basics of shooting, much to her pleasure. [6]
As the days passed, Karl became increasingly convinced of there being an intruder attacking the farm. Eva joined him in a hitch through the property's grounds, searching for signs of the trespasser. Karl asked her if she could go back home but she declined, saying her mother thinks she's "bad," before asking him if he thought so too. Together, they came across an intruder, who made excuses about only being a berry forager trying to make his products. Karl gave in and sent him away, turning around to head back to the farm. Once there, she accompanied him when placing protective runes as suggested by his friend Lejo. As a dense fog rolled in some time later, Karl was attacked by a relentless Fighter who quickly overwhelmed him and knocked the gun out of his hands, which Eva picked up and used to fire at the monster. Before their eyes, the monster shifted to the berry forager for earlier, confronting Karl is his dying breaths for the Johansens cursing the town. As they argued with each other, Eva found a few small bones dropped by the intruder. She then stood by the dying man, telling of a story about a newborn lethally wounded bunny she found in the farm, that she wrapped in a blanket and left to bleed out to not get in trouble. By the time the police arrived, both the dead forager and Eva had disappeared. [7]
Ingrid's funeral finally took place a few days later with Eva as one of the attendees, always by Karl's side. When Orson went missing, she stuck with Karl during the search giving generally unhelpful comments for the situation, such as casting doubt on Astrid's mental state and on the objective of the other searchers. [8]
Her strange behavior grew further when, weeks later, Karl and Eva visited the memorial in town square for the victims of her shooting spree. Still unable to connect her apparition with his late daughter, Karl was pushed away and insulted for being there. Eva took him away from them, but then they both experienced a major Otherworld shift, witnessing multiple monsters being killed by flames. Eva stood unblinking, admiring the massacre of the creatures and excited about seeing the one killing them, the Immolator. Karl, seeing her behavior, pulled her close behind a safe spot so that she would be unharmed, despite Eva's struggles to be let free to watch it. In the end, the Immolator left, with Eva lashing out and leaving in anger at Karl for trying to protect her. [9]
Eva met Karl shortly after Mette Dahl's death. As he mourned the loss of his lover by the town square memorial, Eva approached him and broke down in tears over her being hated by everyone, how she's helpless about the monsters and how she's come to believe that the monster killed her mother as well. She resolved to kill all of the monsters herself, before seeing a Wanderer nearby that Karl recognized from the night Ingrid died. [2] Together, they followed it to the Johansen farm, where Eva smiled as Karl saw himself in place of the Wanderer in the window, realized the truth, and headed upstairs to confront it. Once Karl killed the Wanderer, Eva snarkily commented that Ingrid told her that "it takes a monster to kill a monster." Back outside, she announced her intentions of killing every monster in town.
The next morning, while Karl confided in Lejo at the bar, he got a call from Eva claiming that she had found the monsters at the memorial. By the time Karl got there, Eva was already prepared and armed for the shooting. She told Karl that it was his chance to learn what happened the day of the original shooting, and rejected his attempt to dissuade her, saying she doesn't need to be protected. As she aimed her gun at the horde of Wanderers, Karl stepped in front of her, receiving a gunshot to the chest from one of the real memorial attendees. She watched as he fell to the ground, and disappeared once Karl awakened to the truth of the real Eva's death.
She met Karl for the final time in the Otherworld near the goat pen where she was buried, as Karl stood in the border between living or dying from the gunshot. She exposed her motives behind the shooting and the effects of the abuse she suffered, blaming Karl for never standing up for her or her other sisters. While Karl broke down in tears at his failures, Eva said it was too late, and vanished again to leave Karl to fight the Immolator a final time. [3]
Eva's actions would have consequences for the rest of the family during the next months, as Brit coped by putting the blame of the family's curse on her over anyone else, while the sect of the Heralds attempted to instill darkness into Orson's heart through his family history. Her behavior would eventually echo in Orson, once he learned of Eva's shooting from Brit and Nils. [4][10][11][12][13]
She appeared one last time as part of Astrid's struggle, when a manifestation of Ingrid ordered her to dig up Eva's grave. After reluctantly obeying, Astrid unearthed Eva's skeletal remains near the goat pen, and Eva manifested for her. Eva told Astrid about the day of the shooting, and how she wants to stand up to Ingrid in the family dinner. At the table, Ingrid started scolding and yelling at Eva, provoking her into an argument about their mother's blame in how they all ended up. Despite Astrid backing Eva up in the argument, Ingrid got the situation under control again by reminding Astrid of the murder of Eva that day, making her watch as the recreated scene plays out and Eva drinks the poisoned tea, convulsing on the floor and dying again.
When the Withering was stopped by Astrid and Rachel, and the Collector was defeated, the Stilledalen survivors gathered at the farmhouse for a meal. As Astrid reflected on the journey experienced, she stared at an old photograph of Karl and Eva in a hunting trip, showing them smiling together. [5]

Trivia[]
- While Silent Hill: Ascension was being broadcast, a popular theory among the audience was that Eva was actually a manifestation. This was based on the fact that, in many scenes, no character other than Karl interacted with her.[15][16][17][18][19] This was later confirmed in "Chapter 10: REGRET".
- Eva's character icon in the Ascension live event was updated after a few weeks.[20][21]
