Silent Hill: Origins
The Fire Axe in Origins is a secret weapon that is obtained with the Fireman accolade.
Silent Hill: Homecoming
"I can use this Fire Axe to break down wood barriers and pull obstacles apart."
Alex Shepherd is able to obtain the Fire Axe on his first visit to Silent Hill. It is found next to the crashed fire truck surrounded by dead bodies and is required to advance through the game. It's slower than the steel pipe, though more powerful. It works well on Needlers; by dodging and charging up his attack, Alex can finish them off quite quickly. In addition to its use as a melee weapon, the Fire Axe is also used to chop through certain boarded-up doorways.
"This Axe is sturdier and more effective than the fireman's axe."
It may eventually be replaced with the Pulaski Axe, which can also be acquired in Silent Hill. It's sitting in the bed of a pickup truck parked in front of the entrance to Overlook Penitentiary. Being an upgrade to the Fire Axe, it is better in terms of damage, even demolishing poorly plastered brick walls, though it still suffers from the Fire Axe's slow speed.
Silent Hill: Downpour
The Fire Axe in Silent Hill: Downpour has a similar design to the Fire Axe from Homecoming. Its high durability and power make it an ideal weapon (especially considering the fact that it is one of the weapons that can hack through boarded up doors), and there are many in the game. It's possible to find one immediately next to a boarded up door, or in areas close to one. Murphy Pendleton wields it with one hand when running, but swings quite slowly, which is one of the biggest drawbacks of using it. Murphy can first find a Fire Axe in Hillside. The Fire Axe is also the weapon Murphy wields on the game's cover. Its handle resembles the Bogeyman's Hammer. It is also one of the five weapons Murphy is required to equip, along with the ladder hook, Bogeyman's Hammer, plank, and the knife.
