Harai Katashiro (ハライカタシロ)[2] is a creature encountered by Hinako Shimizu in the 1960s.
Appearance and symbolism[]
The creature bares a doll-like appearance with a face resembling an okame (a traditional mask in Japanese culture)[1] and sharp blades for legs. Hinako ponders in her journal, "Did someone sever both of its legs and replace them with such disturbing things so it couldn't go anywhere? Or was [it] brought into existence just so it could end up like this?"[3]
Behind the scenes[]
Harai Katashiro was designed by kera for the video game Silent Hill ƒ.[4][5] Harai is a Japanese word meaning payment or sweeping/clearing away, while katashiro refers to a paper doll used in Shinto exorcism rites.[citation needed]
