In Japan, it is not uncommon for new games to generate buzz by having their own exclusive genre. This is noted with genres such as "Survival Horror" (coined by Resident Evil) and "Panic Horror Action" (coined by Dino Crisis).[1] While not originally coined by Silent Hill, the series adopted the "Horror Adventure" genre.[Note 1][2] When Silent Hill 2 was being promoted, it implemented the tagline "THE MASTER OF HORROR ADVENTURE".[3] Its usage extended into its later Restless Dreams release.[4]

After the series production had moved outside of Japan, the Japanese releases of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the Silent Hill HD Collection, and Silent Hill: Downpour continued to use the genre.
