She never said anything nice...
—Anita's commentary on her mother.

Krysta Planert is a character that appears in Silent Hill: The Short Message.

History[]

Krysta is a former resident of the economically-depressed town of Kettenstadt in Germany. During her childhood, Krysta was often physically and emotionally abused by her mother, but Krysta eventually manages to get away from her home to build a life for herself. Eventually, Krysta has two children of her own: Anita and a son (whose name is not mentioned in-game), whose father leaves for unknown reasons. Krysta is determined to love them and not become like her abusive mother, and initially, Krysta and her children lived happily. She decides to try and expand their family life by introducing a man as a father figure into their life, but Anita and her brother constantly reject the man's warm advances, and this further drives wedges between their relationships. The constant rejection led to Krysta subjecting Anita and her brother to harsher punishments in an attempt to force her children to appreciate Krysta's partner. However, the man eventually distanced himself from the family, and this further exasperated Krysta's ill treatment towards her children, and she contemplates how her life would have gone differently if she didn't have them.

After the man's departure, Krysta begins to blame her troubles on the children, and Anita is constantly belittled by her mother and often refers to her as a curse left behind by her mother. As time goes on, Krysta would often leave the children to take care of themselves at home in the increasingly pigsty environment, and she forbade them from going outside. Things got progressively worse, and Anita and her brother would often be left in the closet for days on end until a neighbor notified Child Welfare Center of their abuse after they had heard the children's cries for help and acknowledged the unfit living environment. Following this, Krysta locked both of her kids in the closet for over half a day, and this culminated in the death of her young son; Krysta tried to hide his body in the fridge. However, Anita escapes from her home and flees to a neighbor's house, where she reports Krysta to the police. After Krysta confessed and was charged for her crimes, Anita ends up in Child Welfare Center's custody.

Ten years later, an 18-year-old Anita stumbles into the Villa, where she is forced to relive memories of Krysta's cruel behavior towards her.

Quotes[]

  • "This is all your fault! Bad things happen because of YOU!"
  • "Bad girl gets an empty plate!"
  • "If you want food, DO WHAT I SAY!"
  • "Stay home alone!"
  • "Don't you DARE go outside!"
  • "I thought I found my happily-ever-after, but it was all a dream. However, I haven't lost everything. I still have my children — my cute little angels who light up my life."
  • "Why won't you listen to a damn thing I say?!"
  • "I know how to raise a child. I'm a good mother. I'm nothing like the heartless bitch who raised me. I won't fill my children with hate and fear."
  • "Maybe I'm not strict enough with them. We need him for a happy life, and I need them to realize that. I know it's probably a little harsh, but maybe if they don't see the light for a while, they'll finally see the light in him."
  • "I'm giving up my life for you!"
  • "I got contacted by the Child Welfare Center. I guess some nosy bitch or asshole in my building reported hearing a child crying at night in my place. The fuck do they know?"
  • "Everyone else is out enjoying life, while I'm working my ass off raising kids. Why am I the fucking bad guy?!"
  • "If I hadn't had children, maybe I'd be planning my summer vacation with my friends right now. Nothing matters anymore. I'm just crawling through life. I know what's going on in the closet, but I can't look. I just want to be happy. What's wrong with that? I'm done."
  • "You disobeyed me AGAIN! You can just stay in there." (about locking Anita in the closet)
  • "You should never have been born! You're a burden! A curse from my mother! Yeah! That's exactly it! My mother yelled at me, hit me, locked me up... She inflicted that curse on my womb, and I gave it life!"

Trivia[]

  • Given that in the scene where the sticky note-coated walls are first revealed and Krysta's voice is heard spitefully exclaiming what is written on them, plus Anita begins to reflect on her mother's abuse at this time, it can be assumed that the sticky note-draped wall motif in the game is a Krysta-oriented theme.
