"It was tragic, but that's what happens when you get between a sow and her cubs. She would rip you apart to protect them. And I had to protect you."
— Lejo reminiscing to Karl

Lejo Kant is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. He is the owner and bartender of the Ice Lounge in Stilledalen, Norway. Lejo has a close friendship with Karl Johansen and is one of the few residents that sympathizes with the Johansen family.

History[]

Backstory[]

Lejo played a supportive role in the life of the Johansen family. Being a close friend of Karl, he adopted a role akin to an uncle for Karl and Ingrid's young daughters. Following Eva's massacre in the town's square, Lejo was left as one of the only allies and friends of the Johansen's, defending them from the harassment they were subjected to by the other townspeople.

He was also a skilled and strong hunter. As he recounts to Karl once, Lejo saved him from a near-death experience involving a mother bear's attack. Despite his abilities, Lejo's time was mostly spent running the ice hotel in town, serving as its bartender during most of the day. Karl would often visit him at the bar as his wife's illness worsened, with Lejo offering him advice and support.

Silent Hill: Ascension[]

Lejo Leave the Bottle

Karl confides on Lejo about Ingrid's death.

Following the death of Ingrid Johansen, Karl visited Lejo at the hotel and confided on him about the investigation and detective Olivia Haugen's suspicions of Karl being the murderer. When Karl told him about the figure he saw in the farm before Ingrid's death, Lejo was adamant on Karl telling the police about it, even saying that he'd do it himself if Karl didn't. Despite Karl's self-loathing, Lejo maintained his support and insisted on him coming clean to Haugen. [1][2]

Lejo tells Karl and Mette about the strange stories.

During the next days, other people around Stilledalen began to notice strange and unexplained events. As the bartender, Lejo listened to many of those stories, and suggested Karl to ward the Johansen farm with protective algiz runes. He reiterated the idea when Karl visited with his sister-in-law, Mette Dahl, believing that the intruders in Karl's property to not be humans or animals, but supernatural forces. After placing them in the farm, Karl was alerted to a Fighter's presence by the runes being scattered, which he took as a sign of their protection. [3]

The Funeral

Lejo was one of the few guests to Ingrid's funeral, standing close to Karl and Mette while Astrid, the eldest surviving Johansen daughter, gave the parting words for her mother. When a thick fog made it difficult to continue, Lejo and the other attendees were late to notice that Karl and his Astrid's son Orson had disappeared. During the search in the woods, Lejo stuck by Mette's side, losing track of Astrid as well. By the time they went back, all the Johansens had gone missing in the forest. [4]

Astrid and Karl were found days later by Brit, the youngest sister who returned to Stilledalen. While catching up and winding down from the situation, the sisters met up at Lejo's hotel. As their conversation became tense, Lejo intervened and offered them a drink, but it was declined by Brit and he had to reluctantly leave them alone. [5]

Lejo Brit Banned

Lejo kicks Brit from the bar.

After detective Haugen arrested Astrid for murdering Orson, she was found to be unstable and unfit for the case, deeming the arrest illegitimate and suspending her from the police force. Haugen visited the bar to drink her sorrows away with alcohol, reminiscing to an attentive Lejo about her dead daughter. As Astrid arrived to speak with her, Lejo retreated to clean the cups, before spotting Brit entering the bar. He immediately tried to kick her from the hotel, accusing her of an incident the previous night where she got drunk and broke the bar's tables in a fit. Despite Brit having no recollection of the incident and insisting that she wasn't at the bar, Lejo stood firm and refused to let her stay. [6]

Lejo Old Friends

Eavesdropping on Karl's call.

As Karl's inner turmoil grew larger, dealing with apparitions of the dead Eva, he approached Lejo again to think about his situation. They reminisced about the bear attack a few years prior, with Karl's behavior concerning Lejo. When Karl got a sudden call from "Eva," Lejo realized that Karl's mental state was in decline and eavesdropped on the rest of his conversation with Astrid, finding that Karl intended to go to the memorial for Eva's shooting with worrying intents.

Lejo Haugen Best Laid Plans

Lejo confronts Karl's shooter.

Unfortunately, it was too late by the time he got to the memorial with Haugen, as Karl had been shot in the chest in self-defense by an attendee after showing up calling out for Eva and wielding a rifle. Lejo promptly lashed out at them, claiming that their constant harassment was the reason he was pushed to that extreme.

Lejo Last Act

Lejo sends Karl away to start a new life.

After fending off the Immolator in the Otherworld during his struggle between death and survival, Karl found himself in Stilledalen's foggy docks, with Lejo waiting for him. Lejo offered Karl a boat to help him escape the town, since he's considered to be either missing or dead. Though Karl was apprehensive, Lejo convinced him to start anew with his life and to help his daughters move on, before giving him one last handshake and seeing him off. [7]

Lejo About Orson

Worrying about Astrid's mental health.

Following Karl's disappearance, Orson returned to the Johansen farm in an abnormal mental state. Astrid visited Lejo at the bar for advice, and he was fond of supporting her. He warned her that not only Orson was acting strange, more and more people in Stilledalen were becoming victims to visions. He expressed worry for Astrid's mental state, citing how the loss of Ingrid and Mette drove Karl to his fate. When Astrid got worried about whether she should sedate Orson for the social worker's visit, he suggested her to ask herself if it's more important to keep Orson safe or to get him better. Astrid thanked him deeply for his support. [8]

Argument Ice Hotel

Lejo demands the Johansens stay.

As days passed, the town erupted into a panic as it became completely swallowed by the fog world. While many of the townspeople set out in a witch-hunt to kill the remaining Johansens, Lejo gathered survivors in the hotel as shelter from the monsters roaming outside, taking care of the ones becoming catatonic from shifting to the Otherworld as well. When Astrid, Brit and Orson found their way into the hotel, a group of the survivors attempted to have them kicked from their safe place, but Lejo intervened and demanded to let them stay. He apologized for the situation, but he couldn't remove the people wanting the Johansens gone either. [9]

Sanctuary All's Fair

Lejo asks Astrid to leave.

The aggression from the sheltered survivors to the Johansens continued into the next day, when another altercation happened as they began to think that giving Orson to the monsters would end the curse. Although Lejo stopped the first argument in the morning, another ensued in the afternoon, when monsters were drawn closer to the hotel. This time, Lejo was unable to get them away from Astrid and Orson, requiring intervention from Haugen aiming a gun at them to stop. Astrid, Orson and Haugen were then drawn out of the hotel by the others, with Lejo following a while after. He found it impossible to keep up with the conflict, and regretfully asked Astrid and Orson to go, so he could protect the rest of the townspeople. Astrid obliged, not without warning Lejo that the monsters would come for the hotel with or without them in there. As she predicted, the hotel was attacked by the creatures a few minutes after they left, forcing Lejo out to find them in the Johansen farmhouse. Despite his apologies, Astrid had lost Orson again, and she harshly recriminated his decision of having them leave. [10]

Lejo What are We

Gathering the couple for the fight.

Lejo spent the next day in guard for the Immolator's smoke, gathering guns for Haugen and Astrid to confront it. While they developed a romantic relationship, Lejo located the Immolator in town and called for them to go after it, encouraging Astrid to overcome her aversion to guns for it. Although the plan was for the three of them to rescue Orson, Lejo was unable to enter the Otherworld and got quickly separated from Astrid and Haugen. While the couple fought the Immolator and took Orson back, Lejo found Brit near the docks and brought her into town, where they rejoined the group at town square. [11]

Lejo Splitting Headache

Advising Brit about darkness.

The reunion didn't go well for long, as the sisters began to fight over the blame for their problems. In the middle of it, Astrid shifted to the Otherworld and Lejo helped get her back to the farmhouse, as well as locking the violent Orson in a room. He was later drawn by shouting in the attic, coming across Brit (who, unknown to him, was temporarily possessed by an alternate self) and tried to get her to open up to him. He tried to give her advice on how to deal with the inherent darkness in oneself, such as "taming it with reason" like Astrid, or embracing it to understand and make peace with it. Brit, planning to murder Astrid, then suggested that one could kill it. Lejo was then asked to watch over the locked Orson, while Brit took Astrid downtown to kill her. [12]

Repentance Masses

Lejo watches the Snarler attack.

After the murder attempt failed and Brit successfully escaped the fog world, Astrid returned home to Lejo asking about her. He tried to support her again about Brit, but she dodged the topic and asked about Orson instead, who was still quietly locked up. Lejo listened to her thoughts about Orson and their families, but as he was about to give her advice, a stone was thrown at the window from outside. As he realized it was the group of survivors meaning to kill Orson, he asked Astrid for Karl's rifle and stepped outside with her. The group outside demanded to hand Orson to them, before being threatened by Haugen and attacked by a pack of Snarlers. While Astrid went back inside for Orson, Lejo and Haugen decided to stay outside and fend off the monsters. [13]

A Mother's Choice

Meeting Astrid with the survivors.

Lejo successfully rescued a few other witch-hunters and kept them at the entrance of the farm, before hearing shouting from the house followed by an armed Astrid bringing Orson with her. He tried to check on her, but the survivors began demanding Orson to end the curse on the town. Lejo watched her protect Orson both verbally and physically from them, before Astrid shifted to the Otherworld for her final confrontation.

Lejo Haugen Epilogue

Lejo and Haugen at the table.

Once Astrid killed the Immolator and the trauma of Ingrid, Lejo returned to the real world along with others caught in the fog. Back at peace, Lejo joined the Johansen family for dinner, enjoying a cheerful chat with Haugen while Astrid prepared the meal. [14]
