The Maul is a powerful melee weapon found in Silent Hill 3. It is a 14th century medieval weapon from Europe, which consists of a heavy spiked sphere on the end of a metal staff. It also appears in Silent Hill: Book of Memories.
It is found in a locker room within the Underpass, where it is lodged into a locker that has been dented by the impact. The locker is lying on its side, and a dried red stain, assumed to be blood, is present along the impact point; this suggests someone or something was, or still is, in the locker when it was struck. How the maul got there is not explored, but it is commonly noted how out-of-place it seems.
The maul is very strong, has good range, but it is very heavy, so it slows Heather Mason's movements drastically. It also takes great effort to swing the weapon, so attacks are slow as well. Its use is similar to that of the Great Knife.
Heather has several different variations of attack, many of which are sweeping motions or an overhead swing. The distance an enemy is from Heather also affects the amount of damage it takes. If an enemy is struck with the haft of the weapon, it will take less damage than if it were hit with the actual head.
Trivia[]
- A "maul" is a heavy two-handed hammer used in medieval combat, and although this fits its description, it is very evidently inspired after a morningstar, a type of weapon meant to pierce metal armor and crush both bone and tissue beneath it, although, traditionally, it would be a one-handed weapon.
