Not another stroll through this fog, not another rescue mission, not another damn step... until you tell me what really happened to my brother. No more secrets. No more lies.
—Nora confronting Eric Hernandez

Nora Jackson is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. She was a former resident of Hope's Junction, returning to the town to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding her brother's death and finding herself involved in the Withering.

History[]

Background[]

Nora and her brother Jeremy Jackson were common citizens of Hope's Junction during the steel mill's operation, where the latter worked at. Though they would spend time together and enjoy drinks at the local bar after Jeremy's work, Nora realized that the town's industry was in decline and their life wouldn't last well off for long. She decided to leave Hope's Junction for a better place, splitting up with Jeremy in unpleasant terms. This would eventually haunt her, as Jeremy died a year later in the steel mill accident, being scorched so badly that it took weeks to identify him. [1][2][3]

As the Withering started taking place in the town years later, Nora received letters from there, claiming to be Jeremy. While she was distrusting of the letters' authenticity, she was unable to find a logical explanation for the private details described in them. Determined to find out who was targeting her and claiming Jeremy's identity, she set out to return to Hope's Junction in her car, arriving there a week later. [4]

Silent Hill: Ascension[]

Faith's Return

Nora brings Faith to her family.

Upon entering the town's limits, Nora found herself surrounded by dense fog and crashed her car into a ditch. Lost, she wandered through the woods and found her way into the steel mill's ruins. Though she felt like she was being led by Jeremy, she instead came across the young Faith, all by herself near the signs of a recent occult ceremony.[3] Faith asked her to bring her into town, where they both came across Foundation members having an argument outside of their building. There, Nora met Faith's parents, Rachel and Eric Hernandez, who unbeknownst to her had been living in her former home after Jeremy's death. The reunion was suspicious to Nora, as she noticed that Faith acted strangely scared of her mother. As Foundation leader Xavier Candless attempted to have her taken inside with them, she became defensive and refused to, but ultimately decided to go inside for Faith. However, shortly after being brought in, Xavier had her locked against her will in the building's ritual room. [5]

Nora's Story

Nora is held captive in the Foundation.

Eric was asked by Xavier to get information out of Nora, under suspicions of her real identity. Eric approached her later, asking for the details on how she found Faith and why she was in town. While she answered earnestly, she grew impatient at the questions and demanded Eric to get her out of the building, to which he left and locked her again. Eric was later pressured again to ask additional questions to her, making him visit Nora again to find information about "the Lady in the Woods." Without opening the door, he questioned her the next day about it, but she claimed to not know anything about the Lady. In order to prove that she was telling the truth, she offered Eric to let her out in exchange for taking him to the place where she found Faith, which he does later when her account of being a former resident of the town checks out to him. [4][2]

Eric Nora The Girl and the Mill

Nora leads Eric to the mill.

Nora returned to the steel mill's ruins, followed by Eric. Once there, she showed him the place where she found Faith, while also finding a book related to the sect of the Heralds. After explaining more of her brother dying in the steel mill accident, Eric pushed her to come back to the Foundation for them to help her sort things out, to which she reluctantly agreed as long as Eric stood up for her innocence. Though they submitted the book to Xavier and elder Barbara together, their case was treated with more distrust about Nora from both, so she decided to leave again and continue her investigation on her own. [3]

C14 The Accusation

Rachel gathers Nora and Krista to accuse Barbara.

With the Heralds out in the open thanks to her, Nora was approached by Rachel a few days later at a convenience store, while she was asking people for information on Jeremy. She was happy to hear and help Faith if she could, while Rachel was concerned about her behavior since she returned. When Rachel brought up the phrase "to suffer is to thrive in the grove of dead trees" that Faith had been saying, Nora was taken aback as the phrase was also scrawled in the back of one of Jeremy's letters. Rachel begged her to go to the Foundation with her to clear things up for Faith's sake, which Nora accepted. However, when she realized that she was gathered for a Foundation investigation, she attempted to leave swiftly, only for Rachel to stop her and start her accusation. Of the three suspects, she accused Barbara herself of being a Herald, but she shook the accusations effortlessly as Rachel found no support in Krista Lee or Nora, who left the building in frustration, claiming that she didn't care about any of that and that Faith deserved better than to be wrapped up in it. [6]

Nora Safety in Numbers

Nora watches over a catatonic survivor.

As the Withering began to rapidly intensify in the following days, Nora found herself unable to continue investigating, and shifted her focus to help the townspeople suffering the effects of the Otherworld, becoming catatonic and fending off delusions. She locked herself and a group of survivors in the Silver Pines bar, protecting them from the phenomenon taking over the town. With them, she discovered that Eric's best friend, Toby Cirelli, was responsible for the steel mill accident that killed Jeremy. Eventually, Eric, Krista and Faith found their way into the bar, coming across the scene of the afflicted survivors. Nora explained the situation to them, as well as how she herself had visions. She confronted Eric about hiding his presence in the mill accident and his relation to Toby, calling him a coward.

Eric Nora Lay Low

Nora attacks the aggressive survivor.

Their safe haven in the bar would be short lived, as the Entangler appeared inside and attacked them while Nora and Eric discussed her help in the bar's kitchen. They took Faith and escaped, but lost Krista in the process. From there, with the Entangler on their trail, they escaped to the Hernandez' laundromat, finding shelter for the time being. Inside, a survivor recognized Eric as a member of the Foundation, but was knocked down by Nora before he could attack Eric. [7]

After Eric forgave and allowed the survivor to stay, Nora got lost in thought about her objective. She explained how she couldn't give up on her investigation because of the way she parted with Jeremy all those years ago, and how she couldn't give up on him, despite Eric trying to get her to stay for Faith's sake. The discussion continued into Eric becoming more upset, when fog rolled in and Faith suddenly claimed to hear the monsters' scared voices. The Entangler breached the laundromat, forcing the trio to flee to the streets once again.

Nora Rachel Theyll Listen to Me

Urging Rachel to act.

After wandering and sneaking through the fog for a while, they came across Rachel, who had just dealt with her own situation at the Foundation. Nora tried to reassure Rachel about Faith's fearful response, but then a Foundation member ran into them and warned that the building was attacked by monsters, before being killed by a Fighter herself. The three adults watched in shock as Faith showed the ability to control the monsters, demanding Eric to kneel with them. Upon witnessing the monsters attack Eric for refusing and begin to kill bystanders, Nora hid with Rachel and urged her to intervene, claiming that Faith was scared and needed her. [1]

When Faith's power unleashed into more carnage around them, Nora finally got Rachel to build up the courage and calm her down through affection and a parent's love. The group attempted to take Faith home, but on the way they encountered a pair of religious fanatics. While Eric and Faith ran home, Nora and Rachel found out that a faction of Hope's Junction had grown to believe in Faith as a messiah, and attempted to take some of Rachel's blood in her place. Escaping them, Nora tried to get Rachel to rethink the way she interacted with people, after she showed distrust on working with others. Though Rachel cut the conversation short, Nora brought up that one of the letters from Jeremy said his killer lives in their childhood home, expressing murderous thoughts about what she would do to the killer.

Nora Eric The Ones Responsible

Nora demands answers from Eric.

Upon arriving at the Hernandez residence, Nora stopped on her tracks while Rachel went inside. She realized that her childhood home was the new home of the Hernandez family, making the connection that the letters from Jeremy were pointing at Rachel and Eric as his killer. Having been already kept in the dark by Eric about his relevance to the mill accident, she went inside and confronted both of them for the truth, showing them the letter that blamed them. Despite Eric questioning the letter's authenticity, Nora was determined about its contents being truthful and pushed further for them to confess. Faith watched the altercation unfold and screamed out when Nora got physical. causing a major shift to the Otherworld for the four of them.

Eric trust The Innocent

Eric asks Nora to trust them for survival.

The group wandered the monster-infested Otherworld, coming across a large group of Wanderers nearby. In her confusion and stress, Nora demanded to know what was happening to them, with Eric only asking her to trust them in order to survive. She then witnessed a group of people praying to a tree, followed by Krista trying to explain the situation. [8]

With Krista tagging along the group, Nora also met Astrid Johansen, a woman from Norway connected to them through the Otherworld. The six of them were then surrounded by Faith's followers and taken to the steel mill. Nora watched silently as their captors described their beliefs and intentions with Rachel, but as they tried to murder the group, Faith called for monsters and sent them out of the Otherworld, stranding Eric and Nora together near the gas station.

Nora Eric Harsh Truths

Eric recounts the day of the accident to Nora.

Upon waking Eric up, she stopped him from going to the Foundation in search of Rachel. Finally getting a chance to slow down and get the answers she wanted about Jeremy, she pushed Eric to open up and tell her the entire truth about the day of the steel mill accident. Eric recounted that night to her, describing that Jeremy would have been fighting the fire at the time, and Toby's failure to supervise the furnace's temperature. By the end of his story, Nora was a loss of words at the scene described to her.

Eric Nora Punishment

Nora brings up the mill machinery.

They continued their path to the Foundation, untimely entering just as Rachel finished cutting off a finger of one of Faith's followers and threatened to continue if Faith wasn't returned to her. Seeing Eric panic at the scene and the possibility of losing their fight against them, Nora brought up the machinery at the mill being a plausible way to gain the upper hand on them. As Rachel explained that the machinery should still be operational, and adopted her suggestion. [9]

Nora Meltdown

Nora abandons Eric in the mill after learning the truth.

Nora took part in the plan to rescue Faith, checking on Eric before entering the mill. She stuck by his side and headed to the control room to wait for Rachel to get the fanatics into position. However, as they were preparing the machinery, Nora realized that Eric wasn't familiar with it, despite him describing in his story that he tried to shut it down during the accident. Eric confessed that he was trying to help when he folded under pressure and mishandled the control panel, causing the furnace to blow and killing Jeremy in the process. Disgusted and angered at how Eric let Toby take the blame all those years, she abandoned him and fled the mill. [10]

Nora The Accident

The Entangler takes Nora.

The next day, Nora made her way back to the Hernandez residence in order to get to the bottom of Jeremy's death. Upon searching the house, she found several letters addressed to the families of people who died in the mill accident, and came to the conclusion that Rachel was the person who sent them. She then followed Rachel back to the mill and confronted her with the evidence she gathered at her home, wielding a knife and threatening her to tell the truth. Once she got Rachel to confess how she locked the doors to the mill and prevented the workers from escaping the fire, she explained to Faith that her parents were bad people, but that she was a good child. Nora then attempted to stab Rachel, being stopped short by the Entangler's vines wrapping around her leg. Nora was then dragged away into the fog, dropping her knife in the process.

Nora Corpse

Nora's dead body is dragged by the Collector.

As Rachel, Krista and Faith performed the Ascension ritual, they shifted to the Otherworld and heard the loud footsteps of the Collector. He approached them, dragging Nora's dead body behind him. While they stared in shock at his arrival, he unceremoniously tossed her body at them. Though they completed the ritual, Rachel was held back by the Collector, and Nora's body disappeared as she found herself alone in the mill. [11]

Behind the scenes[]

Nora Jackson first appeared in “Chapter 11: RIGHT” of the interactive television series Silent Hill: Ascension. She was voiced by actress Laine Kelly. In early stages of development, the character was named Sheryl Jackson, who would play the role of an undercover FBI agent.[12] The character breakdown from the casting call reads as follows:

"An observant and shrewd investigator. Smart, quick on her feet, resourceful. She's secretive, keeping her true role as an FBI informant hidden. Being undercover is taking its toll. Too often she feels the FBI isn't doing enough and she keeps watching people fall into bad circumstances, and in many instances, plays a role in keeping them inside. She has a strong sense of justice especially around cults and families. We should know when Sheryl is performing a role vs when she's using her true identity."[12]
