Olivia Haugen is a character appearing in Silent Hill: Ascension. Haugen is a former child psychologist and current police detective in the town of Stilledalen, Norway, who becomes involved in the Johansen family's darkness when she takes the case of Ingrid Johansen's mysterious death.
History[]
Background[]
Olivia Haugen lived in Stilledalen since her early adulthood, where she worked as a licensed child psychologist.[1] She had a daughter named Aasta.
One of Olivia's patients was Eva Johansen, one of the daughters of a troubled family in town known for their matriarch's abusive and violent behavior. As Haugen analyzed her patient and performed various therapies on her, she learned from Eva's first-hand accounts of the extent of her mother's abuse. Seeing Eva develop antisocial tendencies exacerbated by her family situation, Haugen attempted to help her improve her mental state, but failed to achieve it in time.[1][2]
One day, a six-year-old Aasta was at Stilledalen's town square when Eva appeared, armed with her father's guns. She opened fire on everyone present in the scene, including the young girl. When the paramedics and police recovered Aasta's body, they were unable to identify her due to the severe damage in her body.[3][1][4] Olivia would eventually recognize her dead body, and upon finding out that the killer was her own patient, she began to harbor deep resentment for the parents that had raised Eva the way she was.[4]
Haugen considered herself a failure for Eva's outcome. Shortly after Eva disappeared from Stilledalen, Haugen abandoned her work as a psychologist and enlisted in the town's police force as a detective, looking to save other people in a different way. Despite her attempts at improvement and coping with her daughter's death, she was unable to let go of her hatred for the Johansens.[4][2]
Silent Hill: Ascension[]

Getting Karl's statement.
Haugen is first seen visiting the Johansen farm as a detective after Ingrid's death. She questions Karl's hazy account of the previous night, but shows her disdain for Ingrid and gets cut off by the family. Before leaving, she reminds Astrid, the eldest surviving daughter, that she remembers what Ingrid was like, and suggests her to come clean about anything they're hiding. She's called back to the farm the following night, where Astrid hands her a syringe with traces of morphine that she found next to Ingrid's body. Haugen confronts Karl outside about it, but Karl taunts her about not truly believing the syringe to be decisive evidence against him. [5]

Questioning Karl.
While the autopsy is carried out, Haugen calls Karl in for questioning at the precinct, exposing that they found puncture marks in Ingrid's body and pressuring him to tell the truth about the morphine. Instead, Karl tells her that there was another person in the bedroom the night Ingrid died, which Haugen refuses to believe. Just then, the results of the autopsy come in, ruling Ingrid's death to be complications from her illness. The detective begrudgingly lets Karl go home, having lost any cause to hold him. [6]

Haugen tells Astrid of the missing body.
A few days later, a nervous Haugen follows Astrid in Stilledalen's town square to give her the news of Ingrid's body disappearing from the morgue. She blames the happening on an administrative error, and tactlessly jokes that Ingrid couldn't have "gotten up and walked away," angering Astrid even more. Haugen assures her that she'll find the body, but that she needs Astrid to trust the police department and tell Karl that everything is fine.

Visiting the Johansens.
Karl calls the police to the farm later claiming to have shot an intruder in the property, but by the time Haugen and other officers arrive, the wounded person is nowhere to be found. Since there's no evidence left of any incident, she clears Karl and tells him to get in contact if it happened again, before leaving the farm. When she visits again the next day, she delivers the news that Ingrid's body was found, although in a desecrated state, and her apologies aren't enough to quell Karl. She leaves after telling Astrid to get in touch for the funeral arrangements. [7][8]

Briefing the family on Orson's case.
During the funeral, Astrid, Karl and Orson, Astrid's son, go missing in the woods. Haugen leads an extensive search in Stilledalen's forest, but they only find the hunter doll that Orson was carrying. When Astrid and Karl reappear a few days later, she seems suspicious of Astrid's role in the disappearance, and tells Karl in private that the search operation is being shifted to a recovery mission, as Orson's survival seemed unlikely at that point. [9][10]

Interrogating Astrid.
After Astrid is briefly institutionalized due to her reckless searching of Orson in the forest, Haugen brings her into questioning. She asks if anyone else has access to Astrid's car, and when Astrid claims only she does, Haugen confronts her about the circumstances surrounding Orson's disappearance. Astrid becomes defensive and accuses her of having a vendetta against the Johansens over Aasta's death, but Haugen simply presents the evidence she found: one of Orson's gloves, stained with blood, stuck to Astrid's car tire. She gives Astrid the chance to confess before the laboratory analyzes the blood on it, but doesn't arrest her yet. Two days later, Astrid calls her to her lab in the hospital, where she confesses finding the other glove in her possession and believes she killed Orson. Haugen arrests her on the spot. [11]

Drinking at the bar.
Despite Astrid's confession and arrest, Haugen is evaluated by the department and suspended from the police force under rumors of fabricating evidence, declaring the arrest illegitimate. She's at the bar later, drinking her frustrations away and calling it "the worst day of her life" since Aasta's death, and lamenting to bartender Lejo that her co-workers had no sympathy for her and didn't even allow her to gather her things from the building. Astrid asks her about the suspension, but Haugen just says that they think she's not impartial and is crazy. She comments that Orson is likely as dead as Aasta, and questions whether Astrid even remembered her name. [3]

Taking Astrid to meet "Aasta."
At this point, the former detective begins to be affected by the Withering, and has visions of Aasta being alive again. She drives to the farm and tells Astrid to meet her in town to ask Aasta about Orson, and although Astrid is doubtful of Haugen's sanity, they gather at a playground to speak to her. "Aasta" turns out to be a Stinger appearing to Haugen as her dead daughter, and the two mothers flee the scene. Haugen is thankful that Astrid joined her, but insists on having seen Aasta even when a police officer tries to ask her about the incident. Astrid comments that she saw a monster, and that Haugen was tricked by the creatures in town. Even though they're dismissed because of their claims, Haugen thanks Astrid and promises they'll find Orson.
During the anniversary memorial of the Stilledalen square massacre, Karl appears in an abnormal state of mind and is shot in the chest by one of the attendees. Haugen and Lejo approach his wounded body, and promptly condemn the people around who drove him to his apparent demise. [1][12]

Astrid forgives Haugen.
Olivia visits Astrid and Orson in the hospital when the latter returns. She opens up about grief and sympathizes with Karl's delusion of having Eva back with him, and expresses happiness for Astrid receiving a miracle in the form of Orson's safety. However, this leads into a confession of how her grudge against the Johansens seeped into her work as a police detective, and her possible mishandling of Orson's case because of it. She asks for forgiveness and to make amends to start over, and despite Astrid's initial rejection, Astrid comes around to it and accepts Haugen's apology later. [4][13]

Trying to talk to Orson.
She goes to the Johansen farm that night to catch up with Orson's condition, learning that Orson has turned violent. She offers to help him as a licensed psychologist, in order to find out what happened during the time he was missing and, more personally, if he saw Aasta out there. Astrid allows it, and Haugen attempts to have a conversation with the boy. She asks about Aasta, and Orson says that he doesn't know her, but that he knows her "friends." As Olivia asks who those friends are, Orson lashes out violently and listing the rot, worms and maggots as her friends while attacking Haugen. As soon as Astrid pulls Orson away from her, Haugen runs away from the room. [14]

Astrid and Olivia hug.
The figure of a "lady in the woods" later surfaces in Orson's speech, leading Olivia to apprehensively suggest hypnotherapy to learn from Orson's memories. In the conversation about grief and parenting that ensues, Olivia and Astrid begin bonding closer than before. Astrid becomes determined to try Haugen's suggestion on Orson, and they gather the following night to carry it out. Haugen swiftly puts Orson in a trance, but his memory turns violent as he describes being in a burning forest. Haugen tries to call the session off, but Astrid pushes through until he snaps and bites her. [2]

Haugen is sedated.
Olivia returns when Astrid calls her for backup against the threat of the Heralds sect coming after her. Although they are armed and prepared to fight, they let their guards down when Aurora, Astrid's social worker, arrives for a routine appointment and they allow her in. During the meeting, Aurora suddenly injects a needle into Haugen's neck to knock her out and reveals herself as the Herald watching Astrid, proceeding to threaten to overdose Haugen if Astrid doesn't comply with her plans. Olivia wakes up mid-session while Aurora is indoctrinating Orson, and immediately attacks Aurora and forces her to flee the farm.

Meeting with Aurora.
Having taken Astrid to the hospital, she's by her side when Astrid wakes up. They read a note Aurora left in the hospital reception calling Astrid to meet her at noon. Haugen chooses to accompany her to the town square as backup. However, when they get there and Astrid tries to demand answers, Aurora makes Haugen vanish from the foggy premises, with only her voice yelling in confusion remaining distant. [15]

Olivia threatens the attacking survivors.
Olivia is next seen in the ice hotel ran by Lejo, taking shelter from the fully consumed town and its monsters. Astrid, her sister Brit, and Orson arrive there only to be met with the hatred of the townspeople believing them to be witches, prompting Haugen to offer her room for the group to stay in for their safety. She spends the next day with Astrid and trying to support the family, but the violence from the other survivors escalates until she has to threaten them with her gun to prevent them from killing Orson. They're eventually ran out of the hotel against Lejo's wishes, but in their way through the woods, they hear the hotel being attacked by a horde of monsters. In their escape, Astrid loses Orson and is knocked out into the Otherworld, so Haugen carries her all the way back to the Johansen farm. [16][17]

Rescuing Orson.
Haugen wants Astrid to rest, but she's too worried about Orson's safety. Haugen insists on helping out in the rescue, and to show her commitment, she confesses her love for Astrid before running away in embarrassment. She's practicing in the shooting range the next day when Astrid joins her and kisses her back, marking the start of their relationship. Lejo arrives shortly after to let them know where the Immolator and Orson are, so the group sets out on the rescue mission. They lose sight of Lejo in an Otherworld shift, but they find the monster and Orson by the town docks. While Astrid distracts the beast, Haugen sneaks behind them and takes Orson, leading them out of the Otherworld and meeting back with Lejo and Brit. [18]

Orson demands Haugen to leave.
Following a fight between the sisters, the group returns to the farm and locks the once-again violent Orson in the bedroom. Olivia sees Astrid afflicted by the situation and makes tea for her, but another tantrum from Orson reveals that he won't calm down until Olivia is out of the house. Despite Haugen's insistence on staying and helping, Astrid asks her to leave for the time being, which she reluctantly does. [19]

The Snarler attack.
She returns to the farmhouse for the last time when a group of townspeople gather outside to demand Orson's death, where she fires shots into the air to make them back down. As she threatens one of their leaders, a pack of Snarlers surrounds the hunters, making Olivia stay outside to fight against the monsters while Astrid takes refuge inside. [20]

Astrid and Haugen in the epilogue.
Sometime later, once Astrid defeats the Immolator and the town returns to normal, Haugen is seen joining the Johansen family for a dinner together, thanking her partner Astrid for letting her save the townspeople in the final encounter. She's last seen sitting down at the table, happily chatting with Lejo. [21]
Behind the scenes[]
“ | Olivia Haugen. 37 to 49 years old; all ethnicities; woman. The town’s dogged investigator who has had a distrust of the Johansen's for years and none of the recent events in town have done anything to alleviate those suspicions. She's a dogged, relentless investigator, driven by her deeply held personal resentment and suspicion of the Johansen family. She also has a lot of warmth and compassion, certainly not one note by any stretch. She essentially reserves her unkindness for the Johansen's.

Olivia Haugen first appeared in the interactive television series Silent Hill: Ascension, voiced by Tiffany Villalobos. In a Q&A session, Genvid Technologies CCO Stephan Bugaj was asked if the romantic relationship between Olivia and Astrid was planned from the beginning. His answer was: "it was part of the story, all along, but happened in the way what it happened, and went in the direction that it went because of the (audience) input (...) those possibilities existed as a fundamental part of the story".[23]
