Rachel Hernandez is one of the six ensemble protagonists of Silent Hill: Ascension. She is a devoted and religious member of the cult known as the Foundation, which follows Paul Radcliffe's teachings. When a ritual she performs goes wrong, her beliefs start to fluctuate and she must do whatever she can in order to protect her daughter.
History[]
Rachel was an ambitious and hard-working manager at the Hope's Junction steel mill. It was in that job that she met Eric Hernández and Toby Cirelli, two friends that worked in the factory level. She felt attracted to Eric's soft and sensible demeanor, while he was in turn attracted to her strong personality. They established a relationship over time and eventually married. Rachel was unsure about having a child with Eric, but she was convinced by him to try it, and it resulted in the birth of their daughter Faith.
As time passed, the profits of the mill decreased, pushing Rachel and the rest of management to sell it to a different company to save the investments. In order to make the purchase more appealing, she started forcing overtime shifts on the workers, increasing the production and enhancing the numbers on paper at the expense of stressing her own personnel.
One day, she lied to Eric about going to a meeting for pitching the sale of the mill to other investors. While the personnel was hard at work inside the factory, Rachel locked the exit doors to prevent them from leaving the workplace. Inside, Toby passed out from drunkenness at his station, setting in motion a fire where Eric would inadvertently kill most of the people trapped behind the doors that Rachel had shut. Both Eric and Toby survived the accident, with the latter taking the blame for the disaster while Rachel's fault was ignored.
As Toby blamed Rachel for having caused the events that led to the fire, she instead moved to find peace within the Foundation, the spiritual organization operating in town, while she started anew with a laundromat business. With the help of the cult, Rachel regained confidence in her ways, as their leader Xavier Candless propped her up as a blessed woman among the community. In contrast, she could be manipulative and absent with her family, greatly marking Faith's perception of her.
She introduced Joy Cirelli, Toby's sister, to the Foundation. Joy had a troubled life and was offered protection and help for her addiction to drugs. Rachel took the role of her mentor, but seeing the severity of Joy's trauma, the Foundation suggested a cleansing ceremony for her, which Rachel would lead.

She is never one to shy away from a fight. She's passionate and relentless. She believes that the Secret Society can save the world, but cannot see she is trapped within a cult. Rachel is a "knights templar" type archetype.
