Silent Hill: Townfall is an upcoming horror game developed by No Code, and published by Konami Digital Entertainment and Annapurna Interactive. It is a spin-off of the Silent Hill franchise, intended to launch an anthology series from various creatives, co-produced by Annapurna. French conceptual artist Franck Besançon serves as one of the creature designers.[2]
Development[]
Konami began soliciting pitches for new Silent Hill titles in 2018, including for an episodic series. Supermassive Games were among the developers to pitch the title, but Konami ultimately turned them down in favor of collaborating with Annapurna Interactive. Supermassive's Silent Hill proposal was repurposed as the framework for their Dark Pictures Anthology series.[3][4][5][6][7]
Konami and Annapurna sought to develop an anthology series, with each episode telling a standalone story.[4][8][9] No Code was hired to develop the first game in this series, which was later announced as Silent Hill: Townfall. Although they do not consider themselves to be a "horror developer," their work has been known to contain frightening and atmospheric elements that associated them with the genre. Townfall was the biggest project they had worked on, with a budget and scope that led to their staff population doubling in size.[10]
On October 24, 2022, No Code started hiring additional staff to assist in the game's development.[11]
Marketing and release[]
In August 2021, the developers of No Code published a featurette teasing their next project. Creative director Jon McKellan explained:
"It's something that I didn't think we'd really get a chance to work on. You know, like something we'd be able to do in our career. It's one of these opportunities that come up and you just kind of... you have to move along with it. We never really set out to make a horror game, but we've kind of ended up in that... whereas this game, we are setting out to make a horror game."[10]
In December 2021, the company tweeted they had expected the game to be announced earlier, but it was not yet ready.[12] In August 2022, No Code posted on their site "We have returned. We have been very focused. We have been growing in size. We have been crafting a nightmare. We have been figuring out how to talk again. Not ready yet building up courage."[13]
Konami hosted a livestream in October 2022, which officially announced Townfall alongside Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill ƒ, and Ascension.[14] McKellan explained that their intent was to respect the source material, but "do something a little different."[15] The announcement trailer contained cryptic imagery and subliminal messages,[16] including hidden text that reads "Whatever heart this town had has now stopped" and "Thy flesh is weak", Morse code for "S.O.S." and "I don't know how to leave", and slurred dialogue potentially asking "Is that really Alessa?"[17][18][19][20]
